Road Records started in 1989 by mistake. There was never a plan to have a recording studio or record label. In fact, the studio was in business several years before we even realized that we were in fact a recording studio. include('http://www.askland.net/global/google-code/google-roadrecords-horizontal.php') ?> In 1987 Conrad Askland was working as a pianist in the Southern California high desert. He bought a piano from a local music store, Tom's Music, and eventually worked there to help pay off the piano loan. Customers would inquire about custom arrangements for songs and he would put down piano tracks after hours. Then some customers wanted string sections, then some wanted drums, etc. Gradually Conrad Askland, quite by accident, had accumulated a very large midi setup to accomodate the different arrangement requests. Then came corporate clients, like Contel and GTE, that wanted new music libraries. Ironically, Conrad had been programming classical music for quite a while on his own, inspired by Walter/Wendy Carlos "Switched On Bach" releases. GTE was looking for classical music custom programmed on synthesizer. At the time there was not a large supply of classical music programmed for midi like there is now. Conrad got the job and this was the first corporate production for Road Records. Next step, Conrad opened up a production studio inside the largest recording studio in town. Midi programming services and high end recording were now available in one location. The recording studio soon folded and Conrad moved his midi production studio inside of Tom's Music store where he gave piano lessons. The high desert town of Victorville, CA did not have a high demand for Conrad's specialties: Orchestrations, Film Score type Soundtracks and Midi programming (Midi was largely looked down on as being "canned" during the early 1990's). Nevertheless, he continued to work on his orchestrations and over the next six years attended UCLA School of Film Scoring, toured overseas, and worked full time as a keyboardist around Southern California. At one point he had a choice of paying his rent at his home or at the studio, what did he do? He lived in his car for three months and kept the studio open. To us, this is the most imporant part of our history at Road Records: Intense committment to the arts in the face of extreme adversity, and with an absence of excuses. What happened next? Honestly we're not quite sure. Somehow all of the years of studying and learning the technical aspects of the trade came together and we now have a large client list from all over the world. Road Records is now part of a group of very successful companies, and Conrad doesn't live in his car anymore...
