If you're a Christian artist then you have a lot of things going for you right from the beginning!

1) Bookings - Most churches now have great sounds systems and performance areas for artists. Booking couldn't be easier with your own built in performance halls.
2) The Christian Music Market - The Christian music scene is wide open now and very accepting of new styles. Gone are the days where the music had to be corny and the lyrics fluffy. You can say what you want to say and say it how you want to say it. It's a great thing that Christian artists can now build a ministry and be free to truly express their art at the same time.
3) Financial Backing - Christian music always seems to have a way of finding it's own backing. At Road Records, Conrad Askland tells Christian artists to not even worry about where the money is going to come from for duplication. If you have a high quality music product, someone ALWAYS steps forward to back the duplication (At least we've never been wrong yet!). Our studio also sets up payment plans for all artists based on their budget so you can pay as you go along.
4) Distribution - Many denominations have their own distribution companies to place your product nationwide in the church gift shop and/or office! Make sure your lyrics and style of music fit in with the denomation you are focusing on so they will want to have you everywhere.
5) Performance Revenue - Christian artists can do performances for a free will offering and usually do well financially if the show is good and targeted at the particular audience. This means you can book yourself at churches without asking for money upfront. It is standard courtesy to give a percentage tithe back to the church for monies received.

Tips For Christian Artists
Ministry First
- Your music should be a vehicle to deliver your message. The most important part of your performance is your ministry. Make sure you are "walking the walk" on and off the stage. If you have any doubt about labeling yourself as a Christian artist, we suggest you don't do it. Go commercial instead. By labeling yourself as a Christian artist you will be put under a microscope on and off the stage. If you're not living it, you will lose your audience in the long run. People aren't stupid and we can all spot a phony eventually.

Your Sound - A particular trap for Christian artists is to feel like they have to have a "Christian" sound. If you're taste and sound is a little out of the ordinary, go for it! You will create your own niche market.

Lyrics - This may seem obvious, but make sure your lyrics are in accordance with your particular denomination's beliefs. Perhaps have your minister read over the lyrics before you record to make sure there is nothing contrary to your denomination. This will usually mean making sure every word has a biblical reference to support it. Particular offenders are usually younger Christian rock groups that write lyrics on the fly without realizing the importance of biblical accuracy.

Options - If you fall between the cracks of being a Christian artist and writing lyrics that are based more on personal experience than biblical accuracy, why not deliver your message without labeling yourself as a Christian artist? We've seen several bands perform this way. There are able to perform in secular performance venues while still delivering their subtle message and witnessing to audience members after the show.

Preaching To The Choir - This touches a little on our previous point. It's important that you decide whether you are going to perform for groups that are already part of the Christian congregation, or whether you want to deliver a message to the mainstream. If you want to deliver your message to the mainstream your lyrics should be more subtle. Get them to like your music first, then they'll gradually start hearing the message. If you're performing for congregations then you can hit them over the head as hard as you want!
